Historic Preservation

The historic preservation division strives to protect historic resources, preserve neighborhoods, enhance economic stability and encourages economic development by identifying, protecting and preserving buildings, structures and other resources in St. Joseph that have historical and architectural value and integrity.

St. Joseph has employed an Historic Preservation Planner (HPP) since 1986 through Federal Community Development Block Grant funding. The HPP is the point person for the city on issues concerning historic preservation. Among the responsibilities of the HPP are:

  • Facilitate the work of the Landmark Commission
  • Conduct Section 106 reviews
  • Ensure the city fulfills its obligations as a Certified Local Government
  • Public education and outreach
