Property Maintenance

The property maintenance division provides professional code enforcement services with the goal of eliminating blight and ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of the city of St. Joseph. The division takes a proactive approach to code enforcement and the main programs are inspections and nuisance abatement. The programs are designed to ensure compliance with the city’s property maintenance and nuisance codes. Property maintenance inspectors enforce code violations on private property for the following categories:

  • Weeds and rank growth of vegetation
  • Trash, debris, rubbish or refuse
  • Mandatory trash collection
  • Vehicles - unlicensed, junk, or elevated
  • Disease or breeding of insects or vermin
  • Dead or diseased trees
  • Excessive exterior lighting
  • Noxious or offensive odors
  • Stagnate pools of water
  • Swimming pool fence
  • Temporary signs
  • Surfacing sewage
  • Substandard housing
  • Dangerous buildings
